Have a look at the manufacturing process of safety-relevant automobile components like steerings, brakes, gears etc. After each forming step, e.g. cold forming or forging, after each heat treatment and also after each machining step, cracks can be formed caused by tension in the structure. If such components are mounted the consequences can be fatal. The difficulty is either to avoid crack forming which is impossible because a 100 % process safety does not exist or to use a suitable test process which enables a 100 % check economically and reliably.

Crack detection by eddy current is recommended for a lot of different parts (e.g. brake disk, steering rack, ball pin, shaft and many more). The testing method stands out due to short cycle time, environmental-friendliness and of course the most important factor reliability, because the sorting decision is made by the testing instrument itself and not by the human eye.
