Heat treatment of driving components:
Russian roulette with long-term  effect?

No matter  if it is about steering systems, drive shafts or gears. Nearly  every part of these components undergoes complex heat  treatments. Failure of the part due to missing or faulty heat treatment can have fatal results: The risks range from individual field failures up to recall actions amounting to millions. A decision of the German Supreme Court of March 31,  1998, ruling that the delivery of a faulty product calls for extensive responsibility of the supplier, puts additional  pressure on automobile manufacturers and car part suppliers.  Thus, 100% testing of all safety-relevant components is  obligatory.

However, it is often not enough to check a component on only one location for its material structure. If you, for example, look at a CV joint (see  sketch), the individual induction hardening areas at the radius, shaft and bell have to be tested separately in order to guarantee highest process stability. When testing at only one location of the component it seems logical to compare it with Russian roulette.

How  should this test be performed? Of course, it should be non-destructive and so fast that existing cycle times are not negatively affected. Economic efficiency and environmental acceptability are also of great  importance. These requirements can only be met with eddy  current.

Up to 16 different test  positions with 8 different test frequencies each can be checked with the eddyliner®Px. This instrument works  according to preventive multi-frequency testing (PMFT). Only  OK parts are required for calibration.

Even smallest defects and differencies in material structure, appearing despite careful production, are detected. During test critical areas are enclosed by an encircling coil. Test process itself merely lasts splits of a second.

For your test part as  well the eddyliner®Px can be the solution. Get in contact with  the manufacturer.
