Within the steering system of an automobile so-called ball studs (photo 1) transfer the steering movements onto the wheels free from play and are of course subject to high forces. |

Ball studs are a typical safety-critical part and during the production process they have to be treated according to certain quality criteria. This usually means that each ball stud must be checked for cracks and correct heat treatment. |

Non-destructive test methods based on eddy current are usually applied as this technology is always reproducible, residue-free and can well be automated. A test system, as shown in photo 2, manages for example up to 6,000 ball studs per hour to test them for surface cracks and correct heat treatment automatically. Further test stations like e.g. dimension test, thread test etc. can be added optionally to the system.
